The Cheesecake Everyone is Talking About. But is it worth queuing for hours? - Uncle Tetsu's Cheesecake
Since its Sydney opening in mid-July, Uncle Tetsu's Cheesecake has been flowing through the press and endlessly talked about amongst Sydney's population. The brand new store, originated from Fukuoka, Japan, opened in Regent's Place next to Towm Hall station, right on George Street. During the first couple weeks since opening, there has been endless queues observed by many, leading to a massive craze appearing on social media.
Today, I managed to get my hands on one of their cakes. How? Well it's simple. I went to the store on a freezingly cold rainy day. Though there was still a queue, it was not an endless one. I only had to wait for 15 minutes before I could hold onto a bag with the weight of the aroma that aired through the streets.
How does it taste? Well, it's actually difficult to describe. It's a very spongy cake with a very slight hint of cheese. The cake is extremely light and fluffy, and is not overly sweet. It has an interestingly distinctive existance in your mouth in the sense that you can feel that very comforting bakery aroma flowing through the sponge as you chew every bite.
After my first slice of cake, it definitely left a smile on my face. So I went back for another slice. However, I would describe this cake as a very bright and comforting dessert, but is not something you can imagine yourself being addicted to. It s a great first impression, and something that lasts, but lasts for 15 minutes or so. Would I go back and buy another one? Probably yes. But would I line up for it? Nope.
It's very interesting to see that the entire store itself is a pretty big size, 95% of its space was used for its kitchen, of which you can see around 20 or so team members just manufacturing batches and batches of cheesecake. One whole cake will cost you $18. They also have a few other choices on the menu, but was listed as "coming soon". One more important thing to note: this store only allows one cake purchase per customer at the moment due to demand. And, the store only accepts cash. So if you've spent an hour in line realising you don't have cash when you order, you've just ruined your own day.
